Spoken English for Kannada Medium Children

Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar launches a new programme called   “Better English for a Better Future”

English teachers with the help of senior students of the Little Rock Indian School have launched what could be a path-breaking programme for the well-being of the rural Kannada medium children. The programme aims at developing the Spoken English of students of Class VIII studying in the VKR Acharya Memorial High School, Kunjal.

Inaugurating the programme, the Principal of Little Rock Prof. Mathew C. Ninan said that English is a lot more than a status symbol today. Everybody knows the immense potentials of English, but the sad contradiction is that the knowledge and skills of English are denied to the less privileged in society. Teaching English is not given the prominence it deserves, by successive governments. This flawed policy results in depriving a large section of society the right to learn English. The choice of language must be left to the parents, he said.

When English learning is introduced at higher classes, children lose the advantage of learning the language naturally at an early age. It is always easier to learn a language when one is young. Children can learn two or three languages with absolute ease. It is therefore not right to deny children the opportunity to learn English right from their primary classes, Prof. Ninan added.

Fifty four students with two teachers will be attending this programme on a regular basis, on all Saturdays at Little Rock, who will provide all the required facilities, and teaching aids to enable them to learn in a suitable environment.

Mr Santhosh Kumar Shetty, Headmaster of VKR Acharya Memorial School thanked Little Rock for extending a helping hand through its teachers and by providing all the facilities needed. He expressed his appreciation for this unique initiative of Little Rock.

Mr Shaji Philip, the Co-ordinator of Better English for a Better Future compered the programme. Vice Principal Mrs Lali Abraham, and teachers of Little Rock were also present.
